UEFA has imposed a one-match suspension on Spain captain and newly signed AC Milan forward Álvaro Morata following a controversial incident during La Roja’s EURO 2024 celebrations. The decision also affects Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who was involved in the same incident.
During Spain’s celebratory events in Madrid on July 15, Morata and Rodri were filmed chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish,” a phrase that sparked a formal complaint from the Gibraltar FA. Gibraltar, located in the south of Spain, has been a British overseas territory since the 18th century.

As a result of the chant, UEFA has handed both Morata and Rodri a one-match suspension at the international level. This means they will miss Spain’s Nations League opener against Serbia on September 5. However, this suspension does not affect their eligibility for club matches, and Morata is expected to join his new Milan teammates for the first time on August 10.
