‘Why can’t we win it?’ – Rogers fancies Aston Villa’s FA Cup chances after comeback win
Morgan Rogers has voiced his belief that Aston Villa could go all the way in the FA Cup, following their 2-1 win over West Ham in the third round. Rogers emphasized the unpredictable nature of cup competitions, saying, “anything can happen.”

Despite a challenging first half where Villa failed to register a shot, the team turned things around in the second half. West Ham took the lead through Lucas Paqueta just nine minutes in, but Villa’s quick-fire goals in the second half saw them secure a comeback victory. Amadou Onana equalized in the 71st minute, and Morgan Rogers netted the winner, sending Villa into the fourth round for the second consecutive year, a feat not achieved since the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns.
This victory also marked Villa’s first win against a Premier League side in the FA Cup since they defeated Liverpool in the 2014-15 semi-final, the last time they came from behind to win an FA Cup match. Villa’s triumph over West Ham was a significant achievement, especially as they had not won an FA Cup trophy since 1957, with their last major silverware coming in the form of the EFL Cup in 1996.
Rogers reflected on the team’s performance, saying, “A bit of belief, we were a bit more patient [in the second half]. There was more forward-thinking.” He added, “We created chances, a bit more mayhem in the final third, and that’s where our goals came from.”
While acknowledging the need to improve their starts, Rogers expressed optimism about Villa’s ability to come from behind. “We know we can come back against anyone. We’ll look to rectify the start of games, but we’re happy with the way we’ve finished them,” he said.
When asked about Villa’s FA Cup ambitions, Rogers was confident: “Why can’t we win it? Anything can happen in a cup competition. You don’t know who you’ll draw, where you’ll play.”
