Young Dane helps Ajax to the top of the Eresdivisie with first goal in five years
Christian Rasmussen Scores First Ajax Goal, Leading Them to Top of Eredivisie
Christian Rasmussen netted his first goal for Ajax, helping them secure a 2-0 victory over Fortuna Sittard on Sunday and move to the top of the Eredivisie table. The win came at a pivotal moment, as PSV Eindhoven dropped points, allowing Ajax to leapfrog them despite having played one fewer match.
The 22-year-old Danish striker made his mark in injury time when he expertly controlled a pass from Wout Weghorst, broke free of the offside trap, and calmly slotted the ball into the net.
Weghorst had earlier given Ajax the lead in the 68th minute, converting a rebound after Fortuna’s goalkeeper Luuk Koopmans saved a penalty from Steven Berghuis.
Ajax had struggled in the first half on a challenging pitch, with Fortuna coming close to scoring when a shot hit the woodwork. The home side threatened again in the second half with a long-range effort from Syb van Ottele that struck the crossbar.
Rasmussen’s goal was his first after joining Ajax from FC Nordsjælland in 2019, and it proved crucial as Ajax and PSV are now tied on points at the top of the Eredivisie. However, Ajax holds an advantage with one match fewer played.
