Tajikistan berhasil lolos ke Piala Asia 2023 melalui babak kualifikasi dengan meraih tujuh poin dari tiga laga Grup F. Mereka mengalahkan Singapura dan Myanmar di jalur menuju Piala Asia.
Bagi Tajikistan, ini merupakan pencapaian bersejarah karena mereka belum pernah tampil di putaran final Piala Asia sebelumnya. Meskipun tidak diunggulkan karena peringkat FIFA mereka yang rendah (109), Tajikistan mampu mencatat sejarah dengan sentuhan ajaib dari pelatih Petar Segrt.
Pada Piala Asia 2023, Tajikistan berhasil mencetak beberapa kejutan, meskipun tidak sefenomenal yang dilakukan oleh Tajikistan. Mereka mampu bersaing di Grup A dengan kompetitif, meraih empat poin dan hanya kalah dari Qatar. Tajikistan melaju ke babak 16 Besar dan mengalahkan Uni Emirat Arab lewat adu penalti setelah bermain imbang 1-1 pada waktu normal.
Capaian Tajikistan ini sangat fenomenal untuk tim debutan di Piala Asia. Mereka akan melawan Yordania pada babak 8 Besar, sebuah pencapaian luar biasa bagi tim debutan.
Perjalanan sukses Tajikistan di Piala Asia 2023 tidak terlepas dari kontribusi Petar Segrt. Sejak ditunjuk sebagai pelatih pada Januari 2022, Segrt berhasil memperbaiki performa Tajikistan dengan meraih hasil yang mengesankan. Tajikistan tampil solid di belakang dengan hanya kebobolan 26 gol dari 23 pertandingan.
